Birthplace of Thomas Telford. Dumfries has Scotland’s oldest working theatre. The coast is OK but the greatest delights lie inland. Wanlockhead is Scotland’ highest village, and Moffat is a delightful tourism town, and one of only two spa towns in Scotland. Some superb golf, especially at Southerness, Thornhill and Dumfries and County.

The north eastern extremities border, and are very typical, of Scottish borders country, towns include Langhom and Canonbie. And of coursed there’s Gretna – and Gretna Green.

Expect: Pleasant rolling rural and coastal countryside, easy paced apart from Dumfries which is often congested, lots of local events and music festivals.

Best for: visiting Moffat, Robert Burns followers, golf breaks, and quiet, adult, short breaks in some rather pleasant country and village inns and hotels. Not much for families. Rather underdeveloped touristically.
