Capital of Lochaber in the West Highlands, a west highland loch side hub and tourist centre close to the Caledonian Canal. The end of the West Highland Way for walkers, and the start of the Great Glen Way. Overlooked by Ben Nevis and home of Ben Nevis Distillery and the West Highland Museum.

Shopping tries to be typically highland, but is disappointing. Its appeal is in its surroundings – inside, it is that inevitable highland hub everyone finds themselves in at some stage of a Scottish tour or experience. Superlative tourism riches surround, from Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Glencoe, from Lochalsh to Glenfinnan and Mallaig.

Expect: A weird one way system, very touristy for whatever reason, rain, low quality gift shopping and plenty of it.

Best for: A base for touring the highland delights that surround, a coaching stop, to see Ben Nevis, and to say you’ve been there!

Typical Fort William hotels: Memories of yesteryear – big mediocre coaching hotels and plenty of bargains in the off season, overpriced in summer. Need to go to the edges and beyond to get the best.
