RENATO DEL VECCHIO

Conference & Banqueting Manager
The Balmoral Hotel

This season we’re privileged to feature Renato del Vecchio, who is the longest-standing member of staff at The Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh. The 5-star hotel is the highest-rated large hotel in Scotland's capital city and it features a number of renowned function suites, including the magnificent Sir Walter Scott room.

Renato, a young Italian employee, started at the then-named North British hotel above Waverley Station in 1969 as a commis waiter with barely a word of English. But, 37 years on, the now legendary Renato is still there... and as the Conference & Banqueting Manager: a demanding role indeed in such a busy, prestigious hotel.

The hotel praises him as "the consummate professional", one who looks after all Balmoral events, from the largest VIP gathering to the smallest breakfast meeting. "His greatest skill is that he makes all clients feel totally at ease, and in the safest hands."

Indeed, renato was at the helm when The Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards 2005 were hosted, to great acclaim, at the hotel. “He was a pleasure to work with – and more: a friendly, calming source of knowledgeable assistance”, says Gary McLean, the event chairman. “Only the merest hint of a bead of sweat on his forehead at the time of peak demand, looking after the needs of around 350 of the country’s top hoteliers!”

So we thought we ought to find out a little more about this charming, dedicated man.

How long have you been in your present role?

I first joined The Balmoral - it was ‘The N.B.’ in those days - in 1969 as a commis waiter. I did leave to spend some time working in London, but returned to The N.B. in the '80s. I then worked at The Caledonian while The N.B. was being refurbished (between 1987 and 1991) and returned when the hotel re-opened its doors in February 1991. I have been here ever since.

What brought you to The Balmoral? Where were you working before?

I spent a few years working in London - in the Paddington Great Western and Charing Cross Great Western Hotels. I had been at the North British in Edinburgh before, and I came back, as the conference and banqueting rooms are the best in the city. I love everything about this hotel: the space and the sheer magnificence of this building. I even love the back areas of the hotel!

How do you cope with the pressure?

I just get on with the job.

Which aspect of your role do you enjoy most / and least?

I love being on the floor, working with my team, serving our guests. I am not so good on the computing side of things and admin!

Do any events in particular stick in your mind?

The Balmoral's Centenary Ball in 2002 was an outstanding event, which was hosted by Sir Rocco Forte and Olga Polizzi. The event attracted around 200 guests, including many of Edinburgh's leading business figures and movers and shakers. A highlight of the evening was a magnificent Champagne fountain for the guests… the first bottle was opened, and poured, by Sir Rocco. I have also served The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh who attended events during my days when the hotel was ‘The N.B.’.

Do you feel appreciated?

Yes. The General Manager, Debbie Taylor, is an excellent leader and she really appreciates her staff.

So, where will you go on holiday to relax? And do you have a favourite hotel?

Italy of course! I love the area north east of Venice, and our sister property in Rome - Hotel de Russie - is beautiful. For relaxation, you can't beat Costa Sheralda in Sardinia for a holiday with the family!

This winter, we salute you: Renato Polo del Vecchio!
