THE HOTELREVIEW
by Gary McLean

LARGE, FRIENDLY AND VERY CENTRAL
Winner: Scottish Budget Hotel of the Year 2007
Winner: May McLelland, Scottish Hotel Housekeeper of the Year 2007
The Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards

Intro

Jurys Inn Glasgow is one of the largest hotels in Scotland, going by the room numbers, quite possibly the largest. Only a couple of year old, it's a tall building sitting at the Clyde end of Jamaica Street, adjacent to (and indeed overlooking the comings and goings of) the city's busy Central Station, where trains from London arrive.

It's a smart new hotel in the 3-star budget category and offers an attractive standard room product and some original service differentials marking it out from competitor brands. A full, hot breakfast is available, for example, and evening dining can happily be recommended as good fare at a fair price.

We like the hotel, which is the current Scottish Budget Hotel of the Year, and can tell you that it operates particularly sound 'green' / environmentally-friendly policies: in May 2007 it won the Gold Award level of the Green Tourism Business Scheme. And that's a big plus in our book. Peter Stack is one very dedicated general manager and we have high regard for the way this hotel is run.

The hotel

Jurys Doyle is an Irish company and their Glasgow hotel has a central position next to the River Clyde. The prime shopping areas of Buchanan Street and Princes Square are 5 minutes away on foot.

Tip: there's a very convenient and smart multi-storey car park right across the road from the hotel and you'll get a discounted rate of just £5 for 24 hours if you ask reception.

Once inside, the glossy Lobby has a very wide reception desk with a good quota of notably friendly staff on hand to check-in new arrivals. The modern décor is in terracotta, russet and cream shades.

Il Barista Coffee Bar is there if you fancy a frothy cappuccino or a stiff expresso, perhaps, while to the left of reception is the relaxed and attractive, open-plan Inntro Bar with its array of seating and a casual atmosphere. For sporting fans there are wall-mounted TVs plus all-day dining and a good choice of drinks ensure customers are well fed and watered.

Innfusion Restaurant, which is also the breakfast room for overnight guests, is the cheerful hotel dining room and you'll find it on the ground level to the right of check-in.

If you didn't bring your laptop, then there's a coin-operated PC available in the foyer area.

Bedrooms

The 300-plus rooms are located over 11 floors, with perhaps the best rooms being corner rooms (which end in the numbers 07, i.e. 1107) as these offer more space and a slightly better layout. The comfortable rooms can accommodate up to three adults, or two adults with two children sharing: just make sure you give numbers at the time of booking so you get a sofa bedded room if needed.

If you want a smoking room (or don't) then the 2nd and 3rd floors are the ones for the lovers of the weed.

Each air-conditioned (another plus) bedroom meets a similar standard and includes satellite TV, hairdryer, tea / coffee tray, desk and chair, voice mail and high speed internet access for £5. Décor is in cream with dark red fabrics for bedspreads; it's a modern 'hotel' look with light wood furnishings and good lighting.

Bathrooms are fresh and bright white, if a bit compact for some. More shelving would have been helpful. Wall-mounted dispensers of soap / shampoo are fine in this price bracket.

Ice machines on each level are a thoughtful extra in this class.

Notably for this Glasgow hotel, it emplyes the services of the Scottish Hotel Housekeeper of the Year 2007, May McLelland. May secured the award (and she was a popular winner) thanks to her management of the huge team here and their attention to detail, including application of environmentally-friendly procedures. You may be confident that your room will be well serviced!

Tip: we recommend rooms on the higher floors, even the top floor if available; those on the corners have better windows. You might want to overlook the station and watch the trains come and go? If so, just say when booking, and although this may mean booking by phone, it's what we'd do.

Dining

There are four eating options in the hotel: Il Barista coffee bar in reception for cakes and pastries; Inntro Bar for a tasty snack menu; Innfusion Restaurant for more structured, trad dining; and the in-room 'tray service' where you call down and order from the main menus and then go and collect your meal when it is ready.

Decorated in a lively style with swirly fabrics and wooden flooring Innfusion Restaurant offers a modern and informal eating set up. We've found the staff helpful and rather caring. It's not expensive and the food has a distinctly homely touch and is surprisingly good. Innfusion is also open 7 days a week, unlike certain other hotel restaurants.

The menu has a decent selection and range of starters and mains as well as some appetising traditional dishes with lots of old favourites for dessert. Recently we enjoyed a fine dinner including a wholesome salmon dish and a wonderful baked apple pudding. Kids are kept happy, too, with their own menu.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served in Innfusion which has a lively feel in the mornings. There's a central island from which everything is sourced. A machine offers an array of coffee types, excellent in the morning, and the traditional-style hot food is nicely cooked with all the basics such as sausages, eggs, bacon and black pudding are available. Porridge is available, too. It will all certainly set you up for the day.

The excellent location so near to the centre and the railway station makes Jurys Inn a good choice for companies holding meetings. The hotel boasts its Dedicated Meetings Centre - an 'advanced corporate meeting facility'. The centre, comprising 10 air-conditioned suites, is capable of hosting up to 100 delegates and is supported by a fully-equipped Business Centre with up-to-date technology. Ideal for board meetings, seminars, training, recruitment and press conferences. There are different catering options depending on individual requirements.

The Reviewer’s View Gary McLean

“Well-run Jurys Inn Glasgow has a conveniently central location and friendly staff. Bedrooms are well equipped for a 3-star hotel and the restaurant is surprisingly enjoyable. Book an upper level room for a quiter stay. It's a welcoming choice for city visitors looking for something cheery, not too pricey and assured cleanliness.”
