Oban - 'Gateway to the Isles'. The embarkation point for car ferries to Mull, Coll, Tiree, Barra, South Uist, Colonsay, Lismore and Islay. The resident population of 8,500 of this unofficial capital of the West Highlands often swells with large numbers of visitors.

Oban is renowned for its glorious gardens, its fabulous views, the ocean promenade, islands all around, ancient monuments and castles, and outdoor activities such as diving, hiking, fishing, bird-watching – even whale spotting. A mecca for water sports enthusiasts with unrivalled sailing, sub-aqua diving, canoeing and sea angling. Festivals, Highland Games and many modern visitor attractions provide plenty of entertainment in Oban in glorious settings.

Expect: Lovely lochside location, busy town centre, congestion in the main streets, very wet climate, delightful in good weather though, great family wildlife and sealife centres.

Best for: Island hopping, best destination base in West Argyll, sailing and boat trips with wildlife watching, fairly good shopping, budget family breaks and holidays.
