Hotels In Roxburghshire
Delightful, most southerly part of the Scottish borders, with extensive southerly border with England. Steeped in history. Robert the Bruce was buried in Melrose Abbey. Roxburghshire was the first county in Scotland to get a coat-of-arms. Ancestors of George W Bush can be traced back here. Famous borders rugby territory. Superb castles including Floors Castle at Kelso. Wonderful championship golf at Roxburghe Golf Course. Main tourist towns are Melrose, Kelso, Jedburgh, Hawick and St Boswells.
Expect: Soft rolling rural countryside, lots of little towns, hamlets and villages, relative peace and quiet, rugby as the staple diet, no congestion – hassle free driving and car touring.
Best for: Weekend and short breaks especially from Edinburgh and North East England, quiet romantic breaks, rugby weekends, history, heritage and ancestral enthusiasts, great walking.
Typical hotels you’ll find in Roxburghshire: In a word ‘good’ – unpretentious, some hidden gems, few weaknesses. Plenty of country inns (not quite so good).
