The gateway to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, Scotland’s first national park. Stirling Castle is Scotland’s second most popular castle.

Expect: A palpable sense of history, yet overshadowed by the clear impression this is a modern city on the move.

Best for: Historical, cultural, ancestral breaks and visits, an essential part of a Scottish tour, decent value short-haul ‘adult only’ short breaks and city escapes from Edinburgh and Glasgow, a good destination base.
